"Sun Sound" is another surprise favorite. So sad, so lonely, that wistful bleating sound like a sacrificial goat and the drum beat hung out to dry like a rattling skeleton over and over before the song continually refibrillates. I have always felt there is a sadness at the heart of the expressive endeavor, something that goes all the way back to the first lonely cell in the lifeless sea, the first atomic spark of solar godhead, a loneliness in being tasked with its legacy, the dark side of the joy captured in "Three-Ring Circus" or the reckless necessity of "Seen My Soul," and this song captures that perfectly. In my own work I personify the sun as the source of all semiosis, all divine expression; the image of the poet or songwriter following the sun, like Phaethon, down is so powerful, and profoundly captures the poignancy and sacrifice at the heart of the expressive call. I love the lines "I will let the silence speak," and "set my history free." When I turned fifty, a pleasure that yet awaits you, I told myself I would release my narratives, my mostly bitter narratives, an ideal in which I have not been wholly successful, but I get the notion. This is a great, great song. - Ethan
